Did you see Nick (conspicuous in his Velo Cycles / Brompton Junction shirt and beanie) with our demo Tern GSD at the screening of "Motherload" on Father's Day at North Fitzroy Library?
Motherload is a fast-paced doco, effortlessly linking sustainability, women's rights, parenting, the struggle to have bicycle riding normalised, the history of bikes, and the joy of getting you and your kids around by bike. It’s inspiring and no wonder it's won so many awards. After the credits rolled to heartfelt applause, there was time for discussion on local cycling issues.
Cr Sophie Wade (Yarra Council) provided insight to the 30kph speed limit, Nick (Velo Cycles) shared strategies to avoid your bike being stolen, including two triumphant air-tag stories where people recovered their own bikes. Jeremy Laurence (Streets Alive Yarra and Streets People Love) spoke about the campaign to save the Charlotte Street Park in front of Richmond Library, and the sterling advocacy work of both YarraBUG and Merri-bekBUG. Liz Honey spoke of Gleadell Street in Richmond which could be a town square in a street, and Sarah Deasey (YCAN) linked bike riding to climate action.
The screening was supported by Yarra Climate Action Now (YCAN), Streets Alive Yarra, Let’s Enhance Gleadell Street (LEGS), Yarra Libraries, Yarra Bicyle Users’ Goup, (YarraBUG), Melbourne Electric Bicycles and Velo Cycles / Brompton Junction Melbourne.
